Muraena is a genus of twelve species of large eels found in the Mediterranean and tropical and subtropical seas. They have a long fin running from the head to the vent, no pectoral or ventral fins, and smooth, scaleless skin. Their strong jaws and sharp teeth make them formidable predators, attacking both prey and enemies. Some species have an additional 'raptorial pharyngeal jaw' to assist in grasping prey.
